"I think I got to the point where I’m really playing music to serve playing music. I’m doing this because it is my calling, not because I’m here to show anybody anything. This is the first record I’ve ever made where I did not ever think about somebody hearing me. We made this record to impress ourselves… The only deliberate motivation was just in the way that I was creating music. I had no theory about what I wanted the end to be, so it was a really beautiful. I got to view, sort-of in passing, what was coming out without saying that’s going to be this and that’s going to be that, because I don’t know."
